United Way, motorcyclists distributing free backpacks, school supplies

For families who could use some assistance with getting school supplies, there will be numerous opportunities to pick up backpacks this month throughout Monroe County.

Here's when and where the Pocono Mountains United Way will distribute backpacks:

Additionally, the local Harley Owners Group and Latin American Motorcycle Association chapters are distributing 500 backpacks, according to Joan Bumbulsky, a Harley group member who is also a second-grade teacher at Pleasant Valley Elementary School.

The first backpacks will be given to students attending a reading and math camp at the elementary school on Aug. 9. After that, elementary students in Monroe County can pick up supplies at:

Any backpacks remaining after the distributions will be divided up among Monroe County elementary schools and Women's Resources of Monroe County.
