TRACK AND FIELD

Recent Heritage High graduate Madison Whyte earned a gold medal as part of the winning United States mixed 1,600-meter relay at the U20 Pan Am Games in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.

Whyte, the two-time winner of The Virginian-Pilot and Daily Press Female Athlete of the Year, ran the second leg and split 51.5 seconds as her relay finished in 3 minutes, 18.07 seconds. Her team won by more than six seconds.

White, who signed with Southern California, is a two-time Gatorade Virginia Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year.

BOXING

Former Old Dominion women’s basketball player Shadasia Green improved to 13-0 as a pro, defeating Olivia Curry of Chicago by unanimous decision in a 10-round super-middleweight fight. It was held at the American Airlines Center in Dallas on the pay-per-view card featuring Jake Paul against Paul Diaz.

Green, 33, who grew up in New Jersey and played 106 games for coach Wendy Larry’s ODU team, endured her longest pro bout and stayed in line for a chance at a championship. As a heavy favorite, she won 99-91, 100-90 and 100-89 on the judges’ cards.

Green, who has 12 pro knockouts, landed numerous punches, even snapping back Curry’s head at times, but couldn’t get her to the canvas. Curry fell to 7-2 with two knockouts.

According to boxingscene.com, Curry is the World Boxing Council’s mandatory challenger to undisputed champion Savannah Marshall (13-1, 10 KOs).

BASEBALL

The Peninsula Pilots ended their season with a victory, holding off Martinsville 8-7 Saturday night to delight one of the largest crowds in War Memorial Stadium history, 4,324.

The Pilots (24-24), who were eliminated from Coastal Plain League playoff contention Friday, bounced back after a dreadful start to go 15-9 in the season’s second half. They were the second-half runner-up to Morehead City in the East Division after being in the first-half cellar.

Hunter Cole drove in two runs and Cole Stanford hit a home run for the Pilots. Henry Garcia scored three runs and batted 1 for 2.

Eight Peninsula pitchers took the mound. Starter Michael Caldon was the only one to pitch more than one inning. Antonio Velasquez pitched a scoreless fifth for the victory.

Peninsula led 8-3 before the Mustangs (18-26) accumulated four runs and four hits off Jay Schueler in the ninth inning.

With two out, Carter Dorighi’s RBI double and Adam Fallon’s run-scoring single preceded Drew Needham’s third hit, a two-run homer that gave him three runs and three RBIs for the evening.

Lucas Carmichael was hit by a pitch before Schueler struck out Doc Daniels swinging to end the season on a pleasant note for coach Hank Morgan’s Pilots.

FOOTBALL RECRUITING

Virginia gained a commitment from tight end/defensive end Henry Omohundro, a 6-foot-3, 240-pound rising senior at St. Christopher’s School in Richmond. He became the 14th UVA pledge for the class of 2024.

His brother Elby has been an All-ACC heptathlon athlete for UVA’s track and field team, and their father, Buddy, was an two-time All-ACC defensive back for the Cavaliers in their early 1990s heyday under George Welsh.

HORSE RACING

Carmelina, a 2-year-old filly, surged on the far outside to win the $150,000 Keswick Stakes over Beachfront Breeze and Remember Me at Colonial Downs on Saturday afternoon.

Jockey Mychel Sanchez and trainer Robert Reid earned the victory in the 5-furlong dirt race in New Kent County.

Also, jockey Jevian Toledo went over the $50 million mark of career earnings by riding Massif to triumph in the day’s third race. Brittany Russell trained the victor.
